Mobility Innovation District (MID)
Phase I: Releasing an Autonomous Vehicle RFI
In February of 2018, the SWBID and Washington, D.C.’s Interagency Autonomous Vehicle (AV) Working Group comprised of DMPED, DDOT and DCOP released a Request for Information (RFI) to engage the AV community and associated technology providers to gather information on potential partnerships, solicit industry input on the policies and procedures that will guide future pilot projects within the District, assess available technology for achieving the aims of this project, and better understanding the needs associated with successfully launching a pilot here on 10th Street SW, also known as L'Enfant Plaza SW.
Phase II: Establishing a Mobility Innovation District
With the information gathered from the RFI, our thinking grew from just looking at autonomous vehicles to considering mobility solutions on a broader scale. We are exploring “how we get from here to there” while finding our city’s desired future-state of urban mobility. A key differentiator between the MID, and other demonstration sites nationwide, would be the focus on the transition between today and the future – in addition to providing a platform for experimenting and testing innovative new technologies. The MID is envisioned as a one-of-a-kind place to explore how cities will adapt to these changes over time as the pace of change for policy, infrastructure and urban design, behavior change, and technology vary significantly.
