What is a BID?
A Business Improvement District (BID) is a special district financing tool used to help stakeholders collectively plan, fund, and implement services and improvements to their community.
A few facts about BIDs:
- BIDs are non-profit organizations overseen by a Board of Directors that provide supplementary services above and beyond the city’s standard baseline
- BIDs are established through majority support of property owners within the borders of their district
- BIDs are funded through a self-imposed assessment on property owners within the BID borders. The SWBID includes only commercial properties
Officially launched in October 2015, the Southwest Business Improvement District (SWBID) is the newest and 10th Business Improvement District in the District of Columbia. We're currently working to redefine the status quo for cleanliness, state of public infrastructure, beautification, and placemaking throughout the neighborhood. The SWBID covers 483 acres of Southwest DC, stretching from 15th Street SW to South Capitol Street, Independence Ave to Maine and M Streets SW.
We work on projects that bring joy, activity, beauty, awareness, and pride to Southwest DC. We convene stakeholders, spearhead projects, and energize community groups on a range of topics including transportation, hospitality, building management, and the arts.
Our neighborhood ambassadors work hard to ensure that the neighborhood is safe and clean. You may have seen our team around the neighborhood in their blue shirts. They take pride in making SW a great place to live. Wave if you see them around! Check out the pictures below to see some of our work!
